If You like One Langshaw, Why Not Send Another to serve on the North Royalton School Board come November 8th

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 15, 2011

(North Royalton, Ohio)—The North Royalton School Board race for the November 8th General Election will be one to remember and once more historic in nature. Out of the field of seven candidates contending for one of the three seats up for grabs on the board, one candidate stands out the most by their last name of Langshaw. No, current Board Member Dan Langshaw’s term is not up this year. But another Langshaw wants voters to give him a chance to serve on the board. This time it is Dan’s father Don Langshaw who is running for one of the three seats up for election on the school board.

Announcement

It is hard to believe we are only weeks away from the end of the year 2010 and that I have been serving on the North Royalton School Board for almost entire year now. It seems like so much longer than that. I must say this has been a great year and it is an honor to serve as a member of the School Board. I truly enjoy all your feedback and confidence in me as a leader. As you may know each January at the School Board’s Organizational Meeting the Board elects its’ President and Vice President for the year. After lots of positive feedback from constituents and much thought I would like to announce that I am running for Vice President of the North Royalton School Board. The year 2011 will be very challenging with the upcoming state budget and many other issues the district will face in the coming year. I believe it is important to step up as a leader and serve in the role of Vice President for the Board. On January 10th the Board will vote on its’ leadership positions. I will keep you posted if I do get elected by the Board to the Vice Presidency; I just thought it was important to share this news with you.

Copy of Board Member Langshaw’s Statement at the Dec. 8th Work Session

Dear President Reinhard and Board,

As we approach our organizational meeting in January 2011, I propose that North Royalton Board of Education does an audit to determine the effectiveness of our current standing and ad hoc committees of the Board. The purpose of the audit would be to determine if it is even necessary to have a board member assigned to certain committees, versus would it be better suited to have an administrator just report back to the board on certain committees that we have.

I have contacted OSBA and according to them, school boards must have by law a Family & Civic Engagement Committee (RC 3313.821) and a Business Advisory Committee (RC 3313.82). Also according to OSBA it is typical for boards in our state to have standing committees for Curriculum, Policy, and Finance. I believe that our board has too many committees with a total of 17. I think about half of our current committees truly need a board member assigned to it.

In addition as a result of our strategic plan which calls for us as a district to increase our engagement with the community. Our current committee system does not do that because of the times the majority of our committees are schedule between the hours of 8am-3pm. The common complaint I get from residents is that the hours of committees discourage community involvement. In addition as a board member, because

I work full time in downtown Cleveland like many of our residents, I too am unable to even attend a majority of the meetings even I am assigned too. I believe the committees that need board members to be assigned to them should meet between the hours of 5pm-7pm. It is my understanding this is also a common practice in other districts.

If all possible can we please re-evaluate our current committee structure before our new Board President, whoever he/she may be makes appointments for the year 2011?

Thanks,

Dan Langshaw

Press Release

Serpentini Chevrolet Takes the Driver’s Seat
in the Naming of the North Royalton Schools Stadium

The North Royalton Stadium Foundation hosted an exciting press conference on Friday, November 19 at 9:30 am at the North Royalton City Schools stadium. The Foundation and the North Royalton City School District announced that Serpentini Chevrolet has purchased the naming rights to the stadium for $100,000. The field will still be named Gibson Field, after former North Royalton City School’s principal Chuck Gibson.

“In 1997, the North Royalton field was named in Chuck Gibson’s honor. Serpentini Chevrolet Stadium, home of Gibson Field, has moved closer to the goal of being the host to more than just football. Chuck was and is a great supporter of the three A’s: Academics, Athletics, and Arts all of which are part of the stadium plan,” said Ed Vittardi, Superintendent, North Royalton City Schools. “Now, with Bob Serpentini and Serpentini Chevrolet’s commitment to our stadium project, we are one step closer to being the host to more than 200 events a year. Soccer will again return to the field, along with track meets, band competitions, youth athletics, community events, and so much more.”

At the press conference, foundation chairperson Larry Vasil thanked the contributors to the project thus far which has raised in contributions more than $500,000. “What a successful five months it has been,” said Vasil. “Our plan is aggressive, but our community is strong and supportive. That is evident with the large amount of donations that we have received.”

He also showed his appreciation to some of those $10,000 and higher donors. They include:

Southern Hills Youth Football
North Royalton Athletic Boosters
North Royalton Soccer Club
Richard Pilat Insurance
Pete Ragone Family, Rushmore Construction
Jocko’s
Larry Vasil Family
Tina Stopar Insurance
Pinzone Financial Services
Royalton Music Center

Parma Community General Hospital has also signed on as a significant sponsor and partner in the project.

The stadium also will be the home field for Holy Name High School beginning next school year.

The goal of the North Royalton Stadium Foundation is to raise the necessary funds allowing the construction of the turf and track to be completed before the 2011 fall sports season. “This is very exciting news for the entire North Royalton school community as the North Royalton Stadium Foundation approaches the exciting possibilities of our “new” community stadium,” said Vittardi.

The North Royalton Stadium Foundation board members consist of Larry Vasil, Chairman; Ed Vittardi, President, George Heinemann, Vice-President; Barry Ezell and Charlie Weible, Co-Treasurers; and Kathy Tomaro, Secretary

Testifying on SB 210 before Ohio Senate

I gave testimony today on Senate Bill 210 Healthy Choices, Healthy Children legislation before the Ohio Senate’s Health, Human Services and Aging Committee, in the North Hearing Room of the Statehouse. I was also joined by representatives from other school districts offering testimony on this pending legislation.

SB 210 calls for the establishment of nutritional standards for certain foods and beverages sold in public and chartered nonpublic schools; requires public school students to have periodic body mass index measurements; requires daily physical activity for public school students and makes other changes regarding physical education; establishes the Healthy Choices for Healthy Children Council.

I was truly honored having the opportunity to testify before the Ohio Senate this morning and ensuring that the North Royalton School District’s voice is heard here in Columbus. It’s great being part of the legislative process and I hope that the suggestions I proposed are included in the final draft of SB 210.

Substitute versions of the bill are slated to be presented next week, with a possible vote on SB 210 scheduled for Wednesday.

North Royalton School District’s Renewal Levy Passes

I just wanted to thank the community for their support of the recent renewal levy for the North Royalton School District. Our schools are a good investment for our children, community, and future. The evidence speaks for itself an “excellent with distinction” rating on the state report card and even national recognition being featured on Forbes.com as one of “America’s 25 Best Schools For Your Housing Buck”. There are great things happening in our district! I would like to note one of those great things is that the school board at the May 10th board meeting will be voting to approve the district’s 5-year strategic plan. It has been exciting that over 800 members of our community have taken part in the process drafting the district’s strategic plan and making this truly a successful community/school effort. Our schools belong to our community and all residents should be very proud of what has been accomplished. I hope and encourage more members of the community to get engaged in the activities of our district. There are many great opportunities to get involved whether it be joining the PTA, attending a school board meeting, supporting our student athletes and events, or giving your input at a (SCENE) school community exchange night for education. Again, thank you all for your continued support of our schools!

Thanks,

Dan Langshaw
