Tomorrow July 4th marks the 242nd birthday for our nation. For generations we as Americans have been blessed to live freely. It is easy to forget sometimes the true meaning behind Independence Day. John F Kennedy said it best “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” A big reason why we are a free is because of the sacrifices made by our brave men and women in the US Military. So if you see a veteran or a service member in uniform on July 4th, thank them for their service.

Rumpke Rubbish & Recycling Holiday Schedule Reminder
In observance of Independence Day, Rumpke trash and recycling collection will not occur on Wednesday, July 4th. Service will be delayed one day during the rest of the week (Wednesday will move to Thursday; Thursday will move to Friday; and Friday will move to Saturday). Rumpke will return to its regular collection schedule the following week of July 8th. If you have any questions, please call Rumpke at 1-800-828-8171.
Beware of Possible Curb Painting Scams this Summer
Beware of possible curb painting scams this summer where a resident receives a flyer taped on their mailbox or door offering them an opportunity to have their address painted on the curb. They ask to have the resident leave payment taped to their front door and the work will be done. Often the money is taken and no work is done. If any residents see these persons dropping off envelopes or painting curbs, please immediately contact the North Royalton Police Department on the Non-Emergency Phone # at 440-237-8686 so they can check them out. Read More about past summer issues with these scams. If you do need a reliable address sign the North Royalton Fire Department does them for residents. They offer a reflective metal address sign that can be attached to your mailbox that can be seen by emergency responders year round in any weather. The cost for the sign is just $15.00 to cover the cost of materials. The Fire Fighters will even install the sign for residents if they are unable to do so themselves. Council Update
Highlights from Council Meetings
Some highlights from the City Council Meetings for June. Council approved a number of Ordinances approving various labor agreements with the city’s bargaining units. Read More. Council also approved Ordinance 18-65 authorizing the purchase of a 2019 Ford F-550 and a Auto Crane Titan 38 Service Body for the City Wastewater Department.

City Update
This year’s road program is underway. Read more. City Council last month authorized the Mayor to go out to bid to repair five more streets as part of the 2018 Road Repair Program. The repair of Akins Road, between Edgerton and York Roads, Gabriella, Lynn, Delsy and Glenwillow. The work on these streets is estimated at $220,000. These projects are described as pavement preservation. Selective based repairs will be performed and then a chip seal and fog seal will be applied. The chip seal is a layer of aggregate stone on top of the roadway and the fog seal locks everything in and gives the pavement the asphalt black look to it. We will also be addressing Sprague between West 130th and York. Even though this road is scheduled to be resurfaced in 2020, there is a significant amount of patch work needed. The City is partnering with the City of Parma to do a surface overlay on top of the existing pavement. The estimated cost is $92,000. Each city will contribute $15,000 and the county will pay for all the materials which will cover the additional cost. These additional projects are the result of income tax receipts that have trended upward and contributed to our strong financial position. This will bring our total to more than $2 million spent on our streets and continue our roads and infrastructure improvements. Read More.

On June 6th after 12 weeks of training I have officially graduated from the 2018 Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department Citizen’s Academy! Thank you Sheriff Pinkney and Cuyahoga County for this great program!! As Chairman of North Royalton City Council Safety Committee I learned so much to help my residents and to support the North Royalton Police Department in keeping our community safe!
On June 13th attended the Partnership for a Healthy North Royalton’s Picnic for Prevention. I had a fun time! Even my son Derek enjoyed his first ever community event! Special thanks to PHNR for all they do to make a difference in our community!
Help Make a DifferenceThis year marks the one year anniversary of the tragic loss of Ward 3 residents of Suzanne Taylor, and her daughters Taylor and Kylie Pifer who were brutally murdered in their Ridge Road home, making national headlines. There is an effort by a close friend to make sure these women are properly memorializing in our community. The plan is for a memorial bench at Memorial Park in Suzanne, Taylor and Kylie’s honor as well as purchase books for the new North Royalton Elementary School set to open in 2020. Donations are being collected to make this possible. During the summer months many kids are home since school is out for the summer and are outside playing in the neighborhoods of our ward. Please be mindful of this and observe the posted speed limits which are typically 25mph on residential streets and 35mph on the main roads of our city.
During the summer months it is a good reminder there were way too many targets of opportunity for thieves, remember to lock your cars, valuables, and homes up! Also if you see something suspicious in your neighborhood report it to the North Royalton Police Department. See Something Say Something! If you have plans to go on a vacation this summer or will be out of town. Exterior Property Maintenance Reminder
As your Councilman I get reports from the Building Department on various violations by Ward 3 property owners, which city building inspectors have found during their inspections. A common violation I start to see this time of the year as the weather gets warmer is of non-compliance with Section 660.14(a) (b) (c) (d) of the Codified Ordinances of North Royalton titled “Weeds and Grass”. A majority of these are properties that appear to be either vacant or in foreclosure, in which the grass has not been cut or the weeds have become overgrown. Here are some helpful reminders about what property owners are required to do for exterior maintenance of their property. Property owners are required to cut any weeds, grass, underbrush and non-edible grass or woody vegetation in excess of 6 inches. Ensure that any ditches are kept clear of any type of grass, underbrush in excess of 6 inches. Exterior of property areas of all premises and lots shall be kept free of any debris, objects, material or conditions which may create a health, accident or fire hazard. The exterior of every structure or accessory structure including fences, shall be maintained in good repair and all surfaces shall be kept painted. Storing abandoned or junk vehicles on your property is not allowed. If you know of any properties like this in our Ward that may have an issue, please report them directly to the Building Department at 440-582-3000.
