Summer is almost officially here. As the temperatures rise so do the amount of projects and things to update you on regarding city government.
Have a great week!

Council Update

Highlights from Council Meetings
Some highlights from the City Council Meetings for May. Council passed Ordinance 15-38 vacating the former Ethel Avenue in the city of North Royalton. Read More. Council also passed Ordinance 15-55 authorizing the Mayor to enter into a memorandum of understanding between Cuyahoga County and the City of North Royalton for the Cuyahoga County’s mass notification System “READYNOTIFY”. Read More.

City Update

House Bill 8
I join other elected officials in our city and across the state in voicing concern about House Bill 8. The bill was approved by the Ohio House of Representatives last month or so and is now before the Ohio Senate. This legislation excludes state parks but not local parks such as the Cleveland Metroparks from mandatory drilling, and would also substantially accelerate the pooling process, making it more difficult for opposing landowners to object. Read More. I have expressed concerns to our State Senator Tom Patton about this piece of legislation. If you are concerned as well, I urge you to contact Senator Patton’s office at 614-466-8056.

2015 Infrastructure Program/Bennett Rd Update
Council has begun discussion on the 2015 Infrastructure Program. I like to note that one of the roads being considered for repair is the portion of Abbey Rd between Albion Rd and Sprague Rd. I will give you an update when I have more information as Council continues discussion on this issue. Read More. Also the repaving of Bennett Road between Edgerton Rd. and Bridgewater Dr. will start in July and should wrap up by late October. Read More.

North Royalton Alternative Transportation Study Update
A community meeting was held on May 12th where preliminary recommendations were shared, which included primarily interconnecting streets in and around the town center. Results of the community survey are also in and pointing to an interest in sidewalks and bike paths for recreational purposes rather than transportation. The full study should be completed near the end of summer and then Council will begin the process of reviewing all the recommendations. Read More.

Senior Housing Plans

At the May 6th Planning Commission Meeting, Gross Builders unveil its site plans for Royalton Place, a $21 million investment for senior housing. Which was something the 2014 City Master Plan identified as a need in our city. Proposed is four buildings, each four story luxury apartments to be built in the newly created Senior Citizen District at the northeast corner of York and state Route 82. Read More.

Ward 3 Annual Hydrant Flushing
This week the Fire Department has started flushing hydrants here in Ward 3. This will continue for the next 7-10 days or so. The Fire Department advises residents to check the water for a rusty color before drinking it, beginning food preparation, or doing laundry. If the water is discolored, run only the cold water for a few minutes until it is clear. They will be using the City’s reverse 911 system to alert neighborhoods of pending hydrant flushing. If you have any questions; please call the Fire Department at (440) 237-4315.

Building Code Violations for Weeds & Grass
As your Councilman I get weekly reports from the Building Department on various violations by Ward 3 property owners; that city building inspectors have found during their inspections. A common violation I see this time of the year is of non-compliance with Section 660.14(a) (b) (c) (d) of the Codified Ordinances of North Royalton titled “Weeds and Grass”. A majority of these are properties that appear to be either vacant or in foreclosure, in which the grass has not been cut or the weeds have become overgrown. If you know of any properties like this in our ward, please report them to the Building Department at (440) 582-3000.

Speed Limit Reminder
During the summer months many kids are home since school is out for the summer and are outside playing in the neighborhoods of our ward. Please be mindful of this and observe the posted speed limits which are typically 25mph on residential streets and 35mph on the main roads of our city.

Vacation Safety Tips
If you are headed out of town for a vacation make sure that you or your children do not announce it on various social media outlets.  Avoid posting pictures of your vacation until you are back home.  Consider putting indoor lights and a radio or television on a timer so that they come on at times when you are usually home in the evening.  If you have a trusted neighbor let them know you are going to be out of town and ask them to keep an eye on your home.  You can always contact the North Royalton Police Department at 440-237-8686 and request a vacation watch at your residence when you are going to be out of town.  If you see something out of the ordinary or a suspicious person in your neighborhood you should immediately report it to the North Royalton Police Department non-emergency number at 440-237-8686.
