Ward 3 E-Newsletter: January 2020

Greetings Ward 3 Resident,

Happy New Year! I am excited for what great things 2020 has in store for our great city and continuing to serve you all on City Council for Ward 3! This term marks a lot of changes in our city with a brand new Mayor, Council President, and Council majority. Read More. I also am in a new role as the most veteran Ward Councilperson on Council. The last few months I have spent a lot of time to meet individually, provided helpful information, and knowledge to all the new members of City Council so they would be prepared day one in office to be effective members of council. All of this has made for a positive transition with everyone being up to speed. I think we have a good group and I hope we can accomplish more progress together for our community.

New Council Term has Begun!
On January 1, 2020 I was officially sworn into my 4th elected term of office as North Royalton Ward 3 City Councilman. Special thanks to my friend and neighboring Broadview Heights Ward 2 City Councilman Brian Wolf for administering the official oath of office to me! Then on January 5, 2020 I had a special Ceremonial Swearing In with family in which the oath of office was administered by wife and the amazing First Lady of North Royalton Ward 3 Marissa Langshaw with most of the extend Langshaw family on hand as well.

New Council Committee Assignments Announced
For the 2020-2021 term I will be serving as Safety Committee Chairman,  Review & Oversight Committee Vice Chair, Member of the Building & Building Codes Committee, and the Council Representative to the City Board of Zoning Appeals. I am excited about assignments, greater responsibilities, and the new term! Click Here to see the full City Council committee assignment list.

Have a great week!

Dan Langshaw

Council Update

Highlights from Council Meetings
Some highlights from the Council Meetings for the month of December. Council approved Ordinance 19-96 a temporary City Operating Budget for 2020 till the new city council and mayor are able to finalize the full budget. Council approved Resolution 19-113 requesting Cuyahoga County to proceed with the reconstruction and widening of Sprague Road from Webster Road to York Road project. The last meeting of the year City Council lacked a quorum so most items were pasted on second or third reading without any action till the new city council took office January 1st.

2020 Transition
On December 7th the newly elected Council President hosted a City Council Orientation Meeting since 2020 will bring about a new majority of Council Members. The orientation helped familiarize my new colleagues and myself with the basics of how City Council works regarding what procedures, policy, processes, understanding the roles of the City’s various departments, state laws, and other helpful information. City Update

Royalton Road Widening (W. 130th  Street to York Road) Project Update
Work continues to install storm sewers along the eastern portion of the widening project.  Crossovers across the street are being prepared to be backfilled with a concrete top for the winter season.  Work will continue at the eastern end of the project to install the storm sewers on the north side of the road under the Ohio Turnpike.  A new storm culvert will be installed across the roadway sometime in January. Weather depending, work on driveways and sidewalks will continue through the winter months. If you have any concerns that come up this project, please contact the County at their local field office in North Royalton at 440-628-9229.

Cuyahoga County Plastic Bag Ban Update
I know there has been some confusion caused by the media and others. Just wanted to clarify that North Royalton is not opting out of the Cuyahoga County Plastic Ban. Ordinance 19-110 sponsorship was withdrawn by our new Mayor Larry Antoskiewicz. Therefore making the opt out legislation dead and no further action will be taken on Council. This legislation was leftover baggage from past administration and did not have any support of anyone on City Council. Cuyahoga County Council also extended the County Plastic Bag ban grace period to July 1, 2020. Surprisingly many residents and local business have been very positive about this change based on the months of feedback I have received. Many businesses have already made the switch in our community and it isn’t all that bad. I will continue to work with any Ward 3 businesses and residents to provide education on this and additional resources. Also I appreciate the County doing what I have asked for in working more directly with local lawmakers like me on this issue finally! Click Here for more information.

NEW ID Requirements for Flying Beginning October 1, 2020

Snow Parking Ban Reminder
Since the snow has arrived. Here is a reminder about snow parking bans and where to find out if one is in effect. A snow parking ban pertains to all city streets is not cancelled until a North Royalton Police Department supervisor deems all roads safe and clear, which typically occurs after snow plow operations have been completed. Violators of the snow parking ban are subject to parking citations and/or impoundment of their vehicles. If you like to find out if a snow parking ban is in place you can check out the NRPD Facebook page. You can also see updates in the Facebook and Twitter feed portions of my website’s homepage at www.danlangshaw.com

Ward 3 Recycling Tip of the Month
Paper is the most recycled material in the U.S. You can recycle many types of mixed paper (paper & boxes) in your curbside recycling. Mixed paper should be placed loose in a curbside recycling cart or bin. If you must use bags to hold your recycling, choose brown kraft bags instead of plastic bags. Flatten cardboard. When setting mixed paper and boxes at the curb for recycling, make sure it’s empty, clean, dry and out of the rain or weather. Mixed paper, corrugated cardboard, boxboard and soft cover books can also be dropped off at a paper recycling bin, typically found in school or municipal parking lots, nonprofits, places of worship and in the Cleveland Metroparks. Paper Retriever and River Valley Paper Company do not provide a list of their locations to the Solid Waste District. Check with your city service department to see if they have an up-to-date list of paper bins in your municipality.
