North Royalton Ward 3 & Community E-Newsletter: October 2020 (Volume 2)

Greetings Residents,Thank you to all those who have contacted me in expressing how happy you are that I will be re-running to earn back my Ward 3 City Council seat with your vote and support in the November 2021 General Election. Again I am confident that with an entirely new City Council and majority that we can make North Royalton a better city for all our families. Most importantly stand up to the dirty politics by the current City Council and administration will not be tolerated anymore.

Speaking of elections, early voting has begun for the November 3rd General Election. So much focus has been on the Presidential race. However, locally here in North Royalton we have four charter amendments that you need to do your homework on. Especially Issues #24 and Issue #26 before you cast your vote. Also listed below are number of other important things to make you aware of going on in our local government.

As always if I can be of any service to you or your family don’t hesitate to email me at danlangshawfornrward3@yahoo.com or call me at 440-785-4240.

Have a Happy Halloween!

Flu Shot Reminder
Although we are still battling the COVID-19 pandemic. Flu season is approaching. It is important for you to consider getting a flu shot this year to reduce the spread of the flu and its impact on our hospital systems. While it doesn’t protect you from COVID-19, it does provide another layer of protection to keep yourself, your family, friends and communities healthy. Starting next week, October 7th the Cuyahoga County Board of Health will be hosting Drive Up Flu Clinics every Wednesday 9:00am-11:30am. No appointment necessary. Masks required. No insurance? No problem. CCBH has affordable options for clients lacking current medical coverage. Appointments are also available at CCBH Parma and Warrensville Hts. For questions call 216.201.2077, email ccbhnurse@ccbh.net, or visit https://www.ccbh.net/flu-shot-vaccine/ Those who are elderly and need help getting to their physician’s office can contact their local Area Agency on Aging at 866-243-5678 to access transportation resources and other services. Anyone without a primary healthcare provider can visit vaccinefinder.org to find nearby pharmacies and other healthcare locations offering the flu vaccine.

Nursing Home Visitation Order
Governor DeWine has recently announced that Ohio Department of Health Interim Director Lance Himes has signed the order that allows nursing facilities to permit indoor visitation beginning Monday, October 12th. In order to permit indoor visitation, facilities are required to meet certain health and safety requirements. The visits will be limited to two visitors and will be a maximum of 30 minutes. Visitors will have to be socially distanced and wear a face covering. Visits are to occur in areas that are separate from a resident’s room. Facilities are required to report visitation information, including visitation status, hours, maximum visitation time, and number of visitors via an online dashboard at coronavirus.ohio.gov. Facilities must register with the state by October 19th. In addition, this order also details compassionate care visits, which are separate and distinct from normal visitation. These visits are not exclusively for end-of-life situations, but can also include situations where a resident was recently admitted to the home and are struggling with the change in environment and lack of family support. Other situations can include when a resident is grieving someone who recently passed away, a resident that may need encouragement to eat or drink that was previously provided by a family member or caregiver and is experiencing weight loss or dehydration, or when a resident is experiencing emotional distress. Facilities should work with residents, families, caregivers, resident representatives, clinicians, and the Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman program to identify the need, length, and frequency of these visits. The order is available on coronavirus.ohio.gov.

Current COVID-19 Data as of October 13th

A total of 16,565 people have been hospitalized, including 3,447 admissions to intensive care units. In-depth data can be accessed by visiting coronavirus.ohio.gov. #MaskUpNoRo Initiative

In late March of 2020, while serving on City Council I launched my #MaskUpNoRo Initiative to get as many homemade cloth face masks to residents and businesses who urgently need in both Ward 3 and North Royalton Community to eliminate the spread of COVID-19!

Because of the help of many amazing volunteers “Mask Angels”, generous donations of supplies, and more. Over 3,200 FREE homemade cloth masks have already been given out so far to the elderly, those with high risk conditions to COVID-19, #NRWard3Buddy Program residents, nurses, front line health care workers, nursing homes, residential care facilities for those with developmental disabilities, essential businesses, essential workers, first responders families, kids, teachers and more throughout North Royalton! Wearing a mask on top of other measures like social distancing and proper personal hygiene will help get us hopefully closer to a return back to normal sooner!

If you need a mask or like to make a donation of supplies email me at danlangshawfornrward3@yahoo.com or call 440-785-4240.

Items Needed Still for Buddy Program

There are still a number of residents in the Buddy Program, especially those who are elderly or have health conditions that make them at greater risk to COVID-19. Since COVID-19 is unfortunately not going anywhere. In addition to COVID-19, we will be approaching flu season too. It is so important for those in the program to have all the supplies they need. Plus some fun things to brighten their spirits too. If your able to donate any of the below items please let me know at danlangshawfornrward3@yahoo.com or at 440-785-4240:

  • Fast food gift cards or certificates
  • Sanitizing wipes
  • Disposable surgical or multi layered masks

If is easier. You can also drop off any of these items at my home anytime and leave them at my front door or on my front bench. My address is:

Thank you for all your help!

North Royalton Charter Amendment Issue #24

Vote NO on Issue #24

North Royalton Residents please make sure you vote all the way down your ballots. Because there are four Charter Amendments on the November 3, 2020 General Election Ballot. Most importantly Issue #24 is another attempt by the North Royalton Mayor after his failed unilateral closure of our city jail to undermine public safety of the community by rewarding political cronies jobs, a power grab to silence any future chiefs from not doing his will or bidding, creates an opportunity to possibly defund our police department by making both police and fire divisions under a new “Public Safety Department”, and worse if the Charter Amendment is approved. Vote No on Issue #24 and KEEP Politics OUT of our Public Safety Forces!

North Royalton Charter Amendment Issue #26

Vote NO on Issue #26

North Royalton Residents please make sure you vote all the way down your ballots. Because there are four Charter Amendments on the November 3, 2020 General Election Ballot. Issue #26 is another Charter Amendment you should consider voting NO on.

Here are some reasons why you should also Vote NO on Issue #26

  • Adding additional ways to waive the requirement of public bidding and picking the lowest and/or best bidder is not fiscally responsible for the City or taxpayers.
  • Ballot language for this Charter Amendment is also vague, confusing, misleading, lacks transparency, and meant to trick voters. The term “Emergency” especially is too broad and not clearly defined to protect taxpayers from possible fraud, waste, and abuse.
  • The City of North Royalton has existed since 1818 with various forms of government and have been able to operate in delivering services to residents even during times of Emergency.
  • Charter Amendment is not necessary. COVID-19 has not stopped the City of North Royalton from functioning or even completing projects during this global pandemic.

City Council Legislative National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

This year’s National Prescription Drug Take Back event will occur on October 24th from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Timber Ridge Plaza at York and Sprague roads, as well as the Giant Eagle at 6000 Royalton Road. Residents may bring their potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for disposal.

This nationwide event addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are unaware medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away both potential safety and health hazards.

In addition to the National Drug Take Back Day, the North Royalton Police Department has a prescription drug disposal bin that is available 24/7 in the lobby of the police station, located at 14000 Bennett Road, for residents to use year round. Needles, liquids, aerosols and biohazards are not accepted.

Royalton Road Widening (W. 130th Street to York Road) Project
Work continues on finishing up the drive aprons and sidewalks along the eastern portion of the roadway, as well as landscaping. If you have any concerns, please contact the County at their local field office in North Royalton at 440-628-8300.

Trick or Treat in North Royalton & Other Safe Halloween Fun

This year Trick or Treat will still occur here in North Royalton on Halloween October 31st from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

To protect the safety and health of all members of our community while celebrating Halloween, please use caution for Halloween and other fall festivities. While broad in nature to cover the situations experienced by most Ohioans, the Ohio Department of Health’s “Celebrating Halloween” guidance provides the following good advice:

For Parents/Guardians of Trick-or-Treaters

  • If taking your children trick-or-treating, limit the number of houses you visit and ask your children to stay as far from treat-givers as possible. For small children, consider holding the bag for them.
  • Wipe off candy wrappers with sanitizing wipes when you arrive home. (NOTE: Never wipe unpackaged food with wipes.)
  • Allow children to eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid homemade treats made by strangers.
  • If your child is at greater risk of complications from COVID-19, contact your doctor before allowing participation in Halloween activities.

For Community Members

  • For trick-or-treating, reach out to neighbors to discuss ways to ensure 6-foot social distancing, how candy can most safely be distributed, and the need for face coverings.
  • Refrain from having children select their own treats from a bowl/common container or set up a hand-sanitizing station. Consider placing treats on porch steps or a table in the driveway with a sign asking children to take only one. Or use other creative ways to distribute treats, such as using a candy “slide” made of PVC pipe, or hanging treats from a wall or fence.
