Summer Safety Tips from the City Safety Director
While we are in the midst of enjoying our summer, planning activities and vacations, criminals are also busy trying to take advantage of easy targets. Many of these crimes are crimes of opportunity. By following a few simple tips you can keep your homes safer and reduce your chances of becoming a victim of criminal activity.
- Keep bushes and trees around windows and doors trimmed so as to not provide cover for a potential burglar.
- Always remember to close your garage door at night.
- When leaving your home, remember to close and lock all doors and windows.
- Always try to leave some type of outdoor lighting on at night. This is one of the cheapest forms of security. Criminals love to work under the cover of darkness. You may want to also consider some type of motion sensor lighting for back yard decks and patios as an added deterrent.
- If leaving for a vacation, remember to stop mail and newspaper delivery. You can also request a vacation watch from police patrols while out of town by calling the N.R.P.D. non-urgent number; 440-237-8686.
- When leaving for vacation, make sure you or your children do not make mention on the many social media web sites out there today such as Facebook and Twitter that you will be out of town for a specific time frame. Criminals look for these easy targets.
- Remember to always LOCK all vehicles, even in your driveway.
- Remove all valuables from your vehicles such as Ipods, cell phones, GPS units, etc. Don’t leave the brackets attached to your windshield which may be an indicator that you may have some type of electronic device in your car tempting thieves to break into your vehicle searching for electronics
Always remember if you see or suspect suspicious or criminal activity PLEASE do not hesitate to Immediately contact the North Royalton Police Department. N.R.P.D. Non-Urgent Number 440-237-8686, For Emergencies dial 911.
