SINCE MY LAST SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE
On August 4th I attended the Ohio School Boards Association’s State Legislative Platform Committee Meeting in Columbus. We reviewed the proposed amendments to the platform, and voted on which ones to submit to the OSBA Delegate Assembly for approval. There was also a brief legislative update that was given. A big topic of discussion at meeting was the importance of local elected school boards in the state of Ohio having local control of the education of its’ students and how the Ohio General Assembly’s cuts the past two years have really hurt ability to do that.

I just wanted to thank the community for its’ recent support of the 3rd Annual Operation North Royalton Cares. Because of your generosity we will be able to help 35 families and about 81 students who are in need of basic school supplies in the North Royalton community this year. It was so great to see our entire community come together again to help our friends, neighbors, and students who are in need during these tough economic times. I want to give special thanks to the North Royalton City School District, City of North Royalton Office on Aging and Human Services, North Royalton Kiwanis, St. Albert the Great Church, Royalton Recorder, The 3 Spot, North Royalton Family YMCA and all the other individuals who helped make this a continued success!
The School Board met on August 8th for a Board Work Session. Board got an update on costs of its’ substitute teacher service. Board discussed the recent update enrollment project report done by Dejong Healy that showed school district enrollment is projected to be relatively flat. Board got an update on the November Bond Issue. The Board had discussion on exploring what other districts in the area policies are on nepotism. The Board also discussed filling board building liaisons for the coming school year. Board reviewed the August Regular Meeting agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board.
Bond Issue Update
If you go to www.northroyaltonsd.org and open the “Bearly a Minute” window you can see the first of several video responses to questions relating to the bond issue that are being done. A whole series of these short answers are planned to address some of the questions many of you may have. There is a new video posted now on OPERATING FUNDS vs. BOND ISSUE FUNDS in the Bearly a Minute section. I believe this is very valuable info for you as it explains the difference in funding. A common question I get asked by constituents is how much the bond issue is going to cost home owners. Below is the cost of the proposed bond issue by home value:
$100,000 market value home – $81.27 per year
$150,000 market value home – $121.91 per year
$200,000 market value home – $162.55 per year
